Educational, not financial advice. Profit before tax. Real fills include spread and slippage; fees vary by exchange, order type and volume tier.

How it works

Exchanges charge a fee when you buy and again when you sell, so a coin that is "up 10%" can still leave you with less than you expect. This answers: "After fees, how much did I make or lose on this trade, and what price do I need just to break even?"

Formula, worked example and sources

Formula

Worked example

Buy $1,000.00 of BTC at $50,000.00 with a 0.6% fee, then sell at $65,000.00 with a 0.6% fee. You get 0.02 BTC for a total cost of $1,006.00. Selling returns $1,300.00 minus a $7.80 fee = $1,292.20 net proceeds. Profit = $1,292.20 − $1,006.00 = $286.20, an ROI of 28.45%. Break-even sell price: $50,603.62.

Questions, answered

How is crypto profit calculated?

Net proceeds from the sale (sale value minus the sell fee) minus your total cost (amount invested plus the buy fee). ROI is that profit divided by your total cost.

What is the break-even price?

The sell price at which you get back exactly what you paid including both fees: buy price × (1 + buy fee) ÷ (1 − sell fee).

Do fees count toward cost basis?

For US federal tax, the IRS says your basis includes the fees and commissions you paid to acquire the crypto (IRS virtual currency FAQ, Q8). Other countries have their own rules.

Does this include taxes?

No. It shows profit before tax. Use the crypto tax estimator for a rough US federal figure, and check your own country's rules.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's an educational calculator. It doesn't predict prices or tell you to buy or sell.
